In 1982, author William Least Heat-Moon published his bookĀ Blue Highways, an autobiographical account of his drive across America in. Least Heat-Moon decided to take the "blue highways" as he called them, referring to the secondary and small country roads that the Rand McNally atlas colored blue. The book was a huge success, becoming aĀ New York Times bestseller. Least Heat-Moon's story is great and inspiring, but he certainly didn't invent the desire to follow the road less traveled.
